At the World Peace Summit 2009, held in Budapest, Hungary, from October 2nd to 4th, leaders and advocates gathered to discuss the importance of fostering inner peace as a solution to global conflicts. Below is summary of a powerful speech given by Children Now's CEO Ricaardoe Di Done that highlights how nurturing inner peace in children can be the key to building a harmonious and prosperous world for future generations.
Our world will be in a better place once we bring inner peace to the children of the world – where values such as respect, kindness, love, and compassion for humankind and the environment are emphasized.
What needs to be done to make sure that children thrive and blossom while enjoying their childhoods and then later become engaged and prosperous citizens of the world? Peace should not be viewed as an unattainable exception but rather as the rule.
Education is the route to world peace. Children must learn that what is important to remember is that we belong to one humanity who loves, cares for, and respects one another and celebrates differences. We know that most children will flourish and prosper, if they have affection, support from their family, and an attentive ear to listen to them when they need to speak about what is in their hearts.
There are very serious and critical problems in industrialized countries – street gangs are violent and create havoc, the school drop-out rate is very high, the use of drugs keeps rising… There is a strong need to solidify families, families need support, they need to be given the knowledge so that they can better maximize their efficiency when they are dealing with difficult challenges in their homes.
Children must remain involved in activities that will increase their self-esteem so that will help build a protective barrier around them when they face challenges from their peers and from others.
Peace begins with each one of us. When we come face to face with hostility, we must not react with cruelty but with compassion and understanding so that we transform that negative energy into a positive force that will resound throughout our homes, our communities, our nations, and the world.
